Excuse Me Officer But I Did What? This really happened to me
This is right out of Candid Camera! Yesterday I decided to take my wife and daughter to Atlantic City to the area known as the Walk, where all the outlets are. I personally hate shopping so I figured I will enjoy the outdoors, it was a beautiful day, my daughter was spending money faster then she can make it. My wife and I just wandered around. As we approached the crosswalk at the intersection of Arctic and Ohio Ave we saw that the light on Arctic was still red, traffic was at a stop so my wife decided to push me across Arctic, when we reached the other side a policeman asked my wife for her identification, she said that she didn’t have any with her, I asked the officer what was going on and he said that we were Jaywalking. My first thought was what a great prank, but when he asked me for my identification I realized that he was serious. After dropping the F bomb the officer said, “That’s it you are getting a ticket”. Believe it or not he gave me a $ 54.00 dollar ticket. Many of you who don’t know me that well should know that I use a wheelchair to mobilize in. The officer was acting like a robot; nothing that I said made sense to him. Then suddenly I realized what was going on. This part is so unbelievable that I will do everything possible to fight the ticket even if I have to go to the U.S. Supreme Court. When I looked at the 4 corners there were policemen on every corner. They would wait until the light was about to change as the people were crossing the street, they would radio to the policeman on the opposite corner, and he would then give that person a ticket. This was happening at every corner; they were ticketing tourists from Ohio, Michigan, Japan, New Jersey. It was insanity. In reality I see the purpose for ticketing you for Jaywalking as being a safety measure, I mean I could get killed if the traffic light were to change and the cars moved. However if that was the issue why didn’t the policeman who was behind me stop my wife from crossing the street if it was a safety issue I mean what would have happened if a car hit me? Instead he waited for my wife to push me across the street then radio the officer on the other corner at which point I was taxed $ 54.00 dollars to cross the street. All they did was entrapped me. I being somewhat of a rebel decided that I had seen enough. I looked at my ticket and saw that the robot officer wrote on my ticket that my offense was Jaywalking, well you know I was really ticked off that he incorrectly ticketed me, I mean look if I broke the law jaywalking I wouldn’t be in a wheelchair I would be walking that’s how I would see it. So I said “Mr. Policeman you wrote me up for Jaywalking” at this point I attracted quite a crowd, once I had my audience I yelled “officer I was not Jaywalking if I was doing anything I was Jayrolling” that’s right Jayrolling, I proceeded to state my case that to the officer that I demand you respect the fact that I was not walking but rolling. He was at that point becoming I would say irritated however, I was demanding that he rewrite the ticket with my offense being Jayrolling, shortly after that he decided he had enough and crossed the street to the other side. In retrospect I had a great time, unfortunately after seeing more than 20 individuals getting tickets, I saw another policeman one who seemed a little more friendlier and I asked him is Atlantic City hurting that much that they have to resort to ticketing tourist that are there to shop at stores or go to the casino’s, his response was that the police received a grant and it was part of the Obama Stimulus package. I voted for Obama if that is the case America is in deep trouble. Don't the police have better things to do? Last time I checked 3 casinos were bankrupt do they want to chase away tourist who spend money to eat, drink shop and gamble? Seems regressive to me. A friend of mine said that is a ticket that they give to Hookers.
